This painting shows the terminus
of the California Street R.R. at the corner of California and Kearny streets. At the lower right hand side of the painting is one of the horse drawn cars of the Kearny and
North Beach R.R.
Looking up California Street one can see the California House which was
a prominent hostelry of early San Francisco. At the corner of California and DuPont Street (now Grant Street) is the Old St. Mary’s Church, the oldest church in San Francisco which still stands at that sight today. At the top of Nob Hill was the mansion of Leland Stanford, one of the men who pioneered the transcontinental railroad.
