The Street of the Gamblers was properly known as Ross Alley, the heart of the gaming district of San Francisco Chinatown. It was also a social center of the largely male community at the turn of the century. News bulletin boards can be seen on the left side entrance to the alley, as men gather to read and discuss the events of the day.

The portly man in blue who is leaving Ross Alley is a portrait of one of the actual Tong bosses who controlled gambling in Chinatown. The tough-looking man behind the Tong boss is his bodyguard. The little shop at center right at the bottom of a short flight of stairs is a Chinese take-out restaurant.

Unfortunately almost all of this was destroyed a few years later by the Great San Francisco Earthquake of 1906.
